Fabian Hurzeler expressed his ambition to "achieve big things and challenge the establishment" during his inaugural press conference as Brighton manager on Tuesday. At 31, Hurzeler becomes the youngest full-time manager in Premier League history, taking the helm after successfully guiding St Pauli to promotion into the Bundesliga last season.
The Texas-born German coach highlighted his excitement about moving to "the best league in the world" as he prepares Brighton for their opening fixture of the 2024/25 season against Everton on August 17. He acknowledged the significant challenge ahead, emphasizing the need for humility, courage, and ability in his new role. "My targets, I want to discuss them with my players; they need to be convinced of that, they need to feel what we can achieve," Hurzeler stated.
Hurzeler has signed a contract with Brighton until 2027, succeeding Roberto De Zerbi, who left the club after two successful seasons to join French side Marseille. De Zerbi had led Brighton to their highest-ever top-flight finish and a historic European campaign, although the team struggled with injuries and ended the 2023/24 season mid-table. Hurzeler plans to build on De Zerbi's legacy while introducing his own philosophy and identity to the team.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom expressed confidence in Hurzeler's appointment, despite his limited experience as a head coach. "The whole city should be very excited," Bloom remarked. "We look at everything, we put a lot of effort into the appointment of any head coach like other clubs do, and we think Fabian is the best fit for the football club. He's the least risk option we had." Hurzeler also acknowledged De Zerbi's influence, noting, "I like the football he played, it had a lot of courage with some interesting elements which I will also try and adapt to my philosophy."
