FA Begins Search for New England Manager After Southgate's Resignation

Posted : 19 July 2024

The Football Association (FA) is in the process of finding a successor to Gareth Southgate, who stepped down as England manager following the team's defeat in the Euro 2024 final against Spain. Southgate's resignation has prompted the FA to explore various options for the role, aiming to find a candidate capable of leading England to a major tournament victory. The search has seen speculation around several prominent figures, including Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and former Chelsea bosses Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and Thomas Tuchel, as well as Tottenham's Ange Postecoglou.

The FA has clarified that while they have identified a number of potential candidates, the recruitment process remains open to anyone who meets the published criteria. The role profile specifies that the next England manager must demonstrate strong leadership, a proven track record in the Premier League or international competitions, and the ability to inspire and develop the team to secure a major trophy. The successful candidate will also need to hold a Uefa Pro Licence and have substantial experience with English football.

Southgate, who had been credited with improving England's image and reaching several key finals, was unable to end the nation’s long wait for a major trophy. The FA's new criteria emphasize the need for a resilient leader who can handle intense public scrutiny and drive the team towards consistent success at the highest level. The role profile stresses the importance of leadership, resilience, and the ability to maintain strong relationships with clubs employing English-qualified players.

The FA has also included an email address for applications, potentially inviting a wide range of candidates to express interest, including those outside the traditional football circles. The application deadline is set for August 2, with England’s first match of the new season scheduled against the Republic of Ireland on September 7.
