FA Advises football players to avoid controversial social media phrase

Posted : 01 November 2023
The Football Association (FA) is taking steps to address the use of the phrase "from river to the sea" in social media posts by football players. Leicester City's Hamza Choudhury recently used this phrase in a post concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict and subsequently issued an apology for its use. The FA has expressed its intention to seek police guidance on how to handle such instances if the phrase is used again by a football participant.

Choudhury clarified that his intention was to express compassion for the innocent people affected by the conflict. However, the FA, along with Leicester City, conveyed their concerns about the potential misinterpretation and unintentional offense that posts on such a deeply nuanced and sensitive topic could cause.

In response to this incident, the FA announced that they will write to all clubs, emphasizing that the phrase is considered offensive to many and should not be used by players in their social media posts. While Choudhury has apologized and removed the tweet, the FA is urging clubs to ensure that players refrain from posting content that may be offensive or inflammatory to any community.

The use of the phrase "from river to the sea" has been a point of contention, with varying interpretations, including some viewing it as a call for an end to Israel's occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza rather than the destruction of Israel itself. This development underscores the FA's commitment to maintaining respect and understanding among its players and communities.
