Exclusive: "It was hard, sometimes there will be no food" - Omoyele Tosin shares football journey

Algerian big shot, Omoyele Tosin Alabi, in an exclusive interview with Africa Sport Network (ASN), shared his football journey, describing it as tough and one that requires resilience.  

The striker, who was born on the 3rd of August 1996, in Lagos State, Nigeria, is currently making waves in the diaspora, playing for USM Khenchela in Algeria. 

Omoyele Tosin Alabi's illustrious football career has been proof of his exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of excellence, which began back in 2012 when he embarked on his professional journey at the renowned City of David (COD) Academy.  

As a young and aspiring footballer, he honed his skills under the guidance of seasoned coaches, setting the stage for what would be a remarkable trajectory in the sport. 

After years of hard work and dedication, Omoyele Tosin Alabi earned his well-deserved spot in COD's first team in 2015, marking a significant milestone in his career.  

Making his debut for the team, he wasted no time in showcasing his prowess, leaving an immediate impact on the pitch.  

In that season, he netted an impressive six goals from just 10 matches, demonstrating his goal-scoring abilities and raising eyebrows within the football community. 

The following season presented new opportunities for Omoyele as he made a move to Osun United F.C., a prominent football club based in Oshogbo, where he embraced the challenge and proved his mettle by delivering an exceptional performance throughout the season.  

With his striking abilities on full display, Omoyele left a lasting impression by scoring an impressive tally of 17 goals and contributing five assists in 30 games, and this went a long way to set him apart as a rising star within Nigerian football. 

Building on his success, Omoyele Tosin Alabi sought new horizons and joined Plateau United FC in 2017, and despite the higher level of competition, he thrived in his new environment, continuing to demonstrate his knack for finding the back of the net.  

In his tenure with Plateau United FC., he showcased his versatility by scoring nine goals and providing 10 assists in 28 games, solidifying his reputation as a formidable force in Nigerian football. 

Driven by a thirst for new challenges, Omoyele decided to venture beyond the borders of Nigeria and embarked on a footballing adventure in Egypt with Nogoom FC., where he showcased his ambition to test his abilities on an international stage, and he made valuable contributions to his new team during his time there. 

However, the allure of home proved strong, and Omoyele Tosin Alabi returned to Plateau United FC., rejoining his former club for the following season.  

This homecoming represented not only a reunion with familiar faces but also a chance for him to continue his impressive footballing journey on Nigerian soil. 

In 2022, Omoyele took another significant step in his career by joining Enyimba Football Club of Aba, a revered Nigerian club known for its rich history and strong footballing tradition.  

Omoyele's move to this club marked a new chapter in his professional development, as he aimed to make a significant impact on his new team. 

Continuing his quest for growth and new experiences, Omoyele Tosin Alabi expanded his horizons beyond the Nigerian borders once again, by signing a contract with USM Khenchela, a prestigious club in Algeria.  

These moves have made Omoyele prove himself as a force to be reckoned with, consistently pushing his limits and making a lasting impression on the footballing landscape, further showing his unwavering dedication, natural talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence. 

In an interview with ASN, Omoyele narrated how he started his career and what it has been like for him, so far.  

During our conversation, Omoyele Tosin Alabi revealed the challenges he has faced throughout his footballing journey.  

From the early days of honing his skills on the streets of Lagos to navigating the highly competitive football landscape, he emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.  

Every step of the way, he encountered obstacles that tested his resolve, but his unwavering dedication to the sport and his relentless pursuit of excellence allowed him to overcome them. 

“I have had a passion for the game since I was in primary school. We were just young boys that used to play from street to street,” he said.  

When asked what inspired him, the striker explained that the joy that came from the sport gave him the greatest inspiration and satisfaction, noting that this has made him go a long way in his professional career.  

For Omoyele, the sport of football goes beyond being a mere profession; it is a profound passion that ignites a fire within him - the sheer exhilaration of stepping onto the field, feeling the adrenaline coursing through his veins, and the euphoria of scoring a goal or contributing to his team's success has been an irreplaceable source of motivation and fulfillment. 

The joy that football brings has been a constant companion, pushing Omoyele to overcome challenges, persevere in the face of adversity, and continuously strive for greatness.  

Whether it be choosing a new club, embracing fresh challenges, or even representing his country on the international stage, the driving force behind these decisions has always been the unwavering joy that football brings to his life. 

“When you have joy in doing something, it usually goes a long way to create some sort of inspiration for you,” Omoyele said.  

Omoyele said his most memorable moments will be the times he had nothing but his dreams and the desire to be successful, despite his challenging childhood and journey to a worthwhile career. 

These memories hold a special place in his heart, as they remind him of the remarkable transformation he has undergone, overcoming a challenging childhood and embarking on a path towards a rewarding and fulfilling football career. 

Born into adversity and facing numerous obstacles, Omoyele's childhood was marked by hardship and limited resources.  

However, even in the face of adversity, his dreams burned brightly, serving as beacons of hope that guided him through the darkest of times, and it was during these early years, filled with determination and resilience, that he laid the foundation for what would become an extraordinary journey towards success. 

Throughout his arduous journey, Omoyele encountered countless hurdles and setbacks; the path to realizing his dreams was fraught with challenges, including limited access to proper training facilities, financial constraints, and the constant struggle to prove himself in a highly competitive environment. 

Yet, it was precisely these adversities that forged his character, instilling in him an unyielding resolve and a relentless drive to overcome any obstacle that stood in his way. 

As he reminisced on those transformative moments, Omoyele recalls the sheer determination that fueled his journey, as he remembered the countless hours spent honing his skills, the late nights of visualizing future triumphs, and the sacrifices he made to elevate his game to new heights. 

“Back then, it was so tough, trying to achieve the goal. I was pushing hard in training, and sometimes, there will be no food after training.  

“I worked so hard to afford the training and transportation fees.  

“I am grateful to God for where I am today, and do not take those times for granted,” he said.  

On how he balances his career with his personal life and relationships, Omoyele humorously mentioned that he knows his family will understand the times he will be away, since his job is what puts food on their table, while stating that he tries as much as possible to not allow his career to leave a huge dent on his family life.  

“I always try my best to ensure that my career does not affect my relationship, I mean, the career is putting food on our table,” he said. 

Omoyele Tosin Alabi exemplifies the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, placing great emphasis on his cherished family time.  

Despite the demanding nature of his football career, he stands firm in his commitment to never compromise the precious moments spent with his loved ones. 

In an industry where rigorous training schedules, frequent travel, and intense competitions can consume one's life, Omoyele consciously carves out dedicated time for his family.  

He understands the significance of nurturing strong familial bonds, recognizing that they provide him with a solid foundation of love, support, and inspiration. 

When inquired about his preparation for competitions, Omoyele paints a picture of a deeply religious individual, emphasizing the importance of prayer alongside rigorous training, cultivating a positive mindset, and embracing the concept of good luck. 

“I prepare for competitions by training hard, having a positive mindset and praying for good luck,” Omoyele reveals. 

Faith plays a significant role in Omoyele's life, serving as a guiding force that influences his approach to both football and everyday challenges, and as a devout believer, he recognizes the value of seeking spiritual strength and guidance before stepping onto the pitch.  

While Omoyele's faith inspires him, he also understands that success on the field requires a comprehensive approach, as he acknowledges the significance of training diligently to enhance his skills, physical abilities, and tactical knowledge.  

Omoyele was asked to give a word of advice to upcoming players who aspire to play in the diaspora, and he said: “Upcoming footballers must show dedication and hard work, as that is the only way out.” 

He added that the journey to becoming a professional footballer is far from easy as it demands unwavering discipline and an insatiable hunger for improvement, and requires waking up early for training sessions, staying committed to a rigorous fitness regimen, and making conscious choices that align with the goal of achieving excellence on the field. 

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Omoyele Tosin Alabi's impact extends beyond the pitch, as he serves as a role model for aspiring footballers, both in Nigeria and Algeria, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and never lose sight of their goals.
