ASN: So how did you get started in your career?
Godwin: I started off brightly. My first professional football was in Ethiopia, the biggest team at George SA. I also played for Seychelles Island as well and had some ups and down. I went to Togo, played as well, then back to Nigeria league champions, Rivers United. Since then, I have been on top flights.
ASN: Must have been a great ride. Could you share some of your most memorable moments so far?
Godwin: My favorite moment has always been my time in Sara sports, Togo. I was a king in the city. The people loved me. Until date, the club president is like my second father. I played one of my best games there. And in my current club I feel the same way.
ASN: This is impressive. Amidst all of these, have you encountered any challenges as a Nigerian in the diaspora? If yes, what are they?
Godwin: The only challenges you can get as a Nigerian is being a Nigerian in another country, we already have that burden to carry for our sins (laughs).
ASN: I can imagine. Racism and certain stereotypes, right?
Godwin: Definitely.
ASN: So, who inspired your sports career? Especially, the fact that you went abroad to pursue your professional football career.
Godwin: It has always been my dream to play soccer. My family has been all for me in my career. They all supported me from the beginning. Until date, I owe them all.
ASN: How do you balance your career with your personal life and relationships?
Godwin: It’s not easy being a professional and living your normal life. For me when I’m in business, I forget my personal life until I’m back in my country.
ASN: What advice do you have for upcoming players who aspire to play in the diaspora?
Godwin: Hard work and dedication. Leave your comfort zone for a better result.
ASN: How do you intend to use your platform to make a positive change in Nigeria?
Godwin: I’m trying my best to help the ones I can. I give out links to my friends in the struggle. I also help my friends in PH with job opportunities, and I will continue like that.
ASN: Thank you very much Mr. Godwin for your time. We wish you the very best in your football career.
Godwin: Thank you for having me.
