Ex-Napoli striker thinks Atletico coach's son as Osimhen replacement

Posted : 27 June 2023
In the midst of swirling speculation surrounding the future of Victor Osimhen, former Napoli attacker Roberto Sosa has expressed his opinion on the best possible replacement for the Nigerian striker, favoring Giovanni Simeone, the son of current Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone.

Osimhen, who had a stellar season with Napoli, attracting interest from top clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain, has been the subject of transfer rumors during the summer window.

Reports from Italy have suggested that Napoli has identified Atalanta's promising Danish talent Rasmus Hojlund as the prime candidate to fill the potential void left by Osimhen's departure.

Another contender for the position is Lille's Jonathan David. However, Sosa's preference lies with Giovanni Simeone, who would compete with Hojlund and 2020 European champion Giacomo Raspadori for the starting role.

Sosa explained his reasoning, stating, "If Napoli decides to accept the offers for Osimhen, I would find it challenging to bet on Hojlund as the starter. In my opinion, if Osimhen leaves, Giovanni Simeone, the Argentine, should be given the nod over Hojlund. Between Raspadori, Simeone, and Hojlund, my clear preference is for the Argentine, as he sits at the top of my list."

The future of Osimhen remains uncertain, with two years left on his Napoli contract.

The club has reportedly offered him a two-year extension, potentially increasing his market value and further complicating the decision-making process regarding his potential departure.

As the transfer saga unfolds, Napoli will undoubtedly weigh the options and opinions presented, including Sosa's endorsement of Giovanni Simeone as the most suitable successor to Osimhen's influential presence in their attacking line-up.
