Ex-Liverpool star explains why Boniface will join Al Nassr

Posted : 29 January 2025

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has offered insight into why Nigerian forward Victor Boniface might be inclined to accept a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr during the winter transfer window. The club is reportedly close to finalizing a deal with both Boniface’s representatives and Bayer Leverkusen, with the deadline for completing the transfer set for February 3.

Since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer of 2023, Boniface has been in exceptional form, scoring 29 goals in 49 appearances across various competitions. Despite his impressive rise in the Bundesliga, a move to Saudi Arabia at the age of 24 has taken many by surprise.

However, Nicol, in a discussion on ESPN, believes the financial incentive presented by Al Nassr may be too great for Boniface to ignore. He pointed out the player's past injury concerns and the unpredictability of future offers, which could make this opportunity a rare and valuable one.

"It's definitely a personal decision," Nicol said. "But when the amount of money on the table is so high, it becomes very difficult to turn it down. Boniface has already faced his fair share of injuries, and he's still just 24 years old."

Nicol continued by suggesting that Boniface might be considering the possibility that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Beyond the financial aspect, he might also be thinking about the uncertainty of future career prospects, which makes it hard to turn down such a lucrative offer.

With the January transfer window drawing to a close, Boniface’s decision will have significant implications, not only for his own career but also for the future of the Saudi Pro League. If the deal goes through, it could further elevate the profile of the league and open the door for other top-tier talents to consider moves to Saudi Arabia.

As the clock ticks down, Boniface’s next move remains highly anticipated, with fans and pundits alike eager to see how his career trajectory unfolds, whether he stays in the Bundesliga or takes the lucrative plunge into Saudi football.
