Ex-international Stella Mbachu commended the Super Falcons' performance in their 5-0 victory over Cape Verde at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Thursday, marking a resounding continuation of their 2024 Women's Africa Nations Cup qualifying series.
Mbachu, who earned 88 caps and scored 20 goals during her career with the Super Falcons, expressed her commendation in an exclusive interview in Lagos.
Despite the withdrawal of some key players, the Super Falcons, 11-time champions of the African Women Cup of Nations, notably in 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018, convincingly defeated Cape Verde in the two-legged 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
"I’m glad they won; this will send a signal to everyone that the girls are serious. It’s a very good start for the players. I know traveling to Cape Verde wouldn’t pose any threat to the girls. They're in tune with each other; they were fantastic, and I’m proud of them," she said.
The Super Falcons dominated Cape Verde 5-0 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, where Cape Verde, whose biggest win was against Mauritania (6-0) since their international debut in 2018, struggled against the soaring Falcons.
Mbachu highlighted that winning the match without star players demonstrated that no player was indispensable, opening opportunities for new talents.
"This is a positive development; it will give more girls the opportunity to get into the team and prove their worth. I won’t name names, but Nigerians can see the emergence of new stars. The coach can try out other girls, so even if a player is on the bench, she’s still a potential threat. We have the talents; we should continually discover more great players," she said.
The Falcons will travel to Paris on Dec. 5 for the second leg. Justin Madugu, Head Coach of the Super Falcons, assured reporters that his players were ready for the challenge and would undoubtedly secure a ticket to Morocco next year.
