Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has paid tribute to Finidi George's legendary World Cup goal, which continues to be etched in the memories of Nigerian football fans. This tribute came as FIFA and top European clubs marked the 54th birthday of the Nigerian football great.
Finidi, a key figure in Nigeria's golden generation, was honoured by FIFA with a nostalgic video showcasing his famous goal against Greece during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. The goal remains one of the most iconic moments of that tournament and a standout memory for fans of Nigerian football.
FIFA shared the footage across its social media platforms, showcasing Finidi’s graceful finish and his memorable celebration, where he humorously imitated a dog urinating at the corner flag. The post quickly garnered attention, with fans and former teammates praising both the goal and the celebration. Reacting to this, former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sunday Oliseh, who was part of the Nigeria squad during the 1994 World Cup, expressed his admiration on social media, writing: “Look at that finish by ‘Finito’. Ol Boy, we really had a team full of top world-class players. I enjoyed every minute being a part of this. I can see Amunike, Finidi, Chidi Nwanu, Baba Yekini, and my humble self ecstatic as the world watched!”
Finidi’s international career spanned over a decade, earning him 62 caps and six goals for Nigeria. His presence at two World Cups (1994 and 1998) was a highlight of his career, along with his victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and numerous AFCON appearances. His birthday was also marked by tributes from former clubs Ajax and Real Betis, who celebrated his legacy.
Ajax, one of the clubs that played a pivotal role in Finidi's career, posted a heartfelt message: “Happy birthday, Finidi George!” Similarly, Real Betis also paid tribute, saying: “Happy birthday, oga Finidi.” Finidi’s journey began in Nigeria with clubs like Calabar Rovers, Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland), and Sharks, before his breakthrough move to Ajax in 1993.
During his time at Ajax, Finidi achieved significant success, winning the UEFA Champions League in 1995, three Eredivisie titles, and the Intercontinental Cup. His performances at the club cemented his place as one of the finest wingers in Europe. In 1996, he moved to Real Betis, where he continued to impress, scoring in the Copa del Rey final and helping the team finish fourth in La Liga. He also had stints with Mallorca and Ipswich Town in the Premier League, where he made a memorable impact, including scoring twice in a victory over Derby County.
Now a football manager, Finidi George continues to make his mark in Nigerian football. He led Enyimba to the Nigeria Premier League title in 2023 and briefly managed the Super Eagles. Currently, he is in charge of Rivers United, where he is guiding the team in their pursuit of another NPFL title. Finidi's legacy as both a player and manager continues to inspire many in Nigerian football.
