Former Burnley star Steven Thompson believes that Cyriel Dessers netted one of his most significant goals for Rangers in their 2-1 victory over St. Mirren at the SMISA Stadium.
Rangers took the lead with an own goal from James Bolton in the 32nd minute, but St. Mirren quickly equalized through Mikael Mandron just five minutes later.
The match remained finely poised until the 74th minute when Dessers headed home a superb delivery from James Tavernier, securing the crucial winning goal.
Dessers, who arrived at Rangers from US Cremonese last July, has now notched up 20 goals for the Scottish club, a commendable tally given his initial struggles at Ibrox.
The Belgian-born striker found his rhythm under manager Philippe Clement, who replaced Michael Beale in October 2023, although he still faced challenges maintaining consistency.
Thompson, who has played for both Rangers and St. Mirren, acknowledged Dessers' achievement of reaching 20 goals in his debut season with Rangers.
"Dessers may have missed several chances, but finishing the season with over 20 goals is a great return," Thompson commented on BBC Sportsound.
"This goal could be one of the most important he scores in a Rangers shirt."
Dessers' 20-goal haul comprises fourteen in the Premiership, three in the Scottish FA Cup, and one each in the Europa League, Champions League qualifiers, and League Cup.
