Former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amuneke has signaled his interest in becoming the head coach of the Super Eagles amid uncertainties surrounding the tenure of coach Jose Peseiro. Peseiro's contract with the Nigeria Football Federation concluded immediately after the conclusion of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). A reported clause in Peseiro's contract suggested an extension if Nigeria reached the AFCON semifinals, a milestone he achieved as the Super Eagles made it to the final but narrowly lost 2-1 to host Cote d’Ivoire.
Despite Peseiro's achievement, the NFF has not provided clarity on his contract situation. On Tuesday, Peseiro and his Super Eagles players were honored with the national title of Member of the Order of the Niger. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Amuneke, who previously coached the Golden Eaglets to victory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, has expressed his readiness to serve Nigeria again.
In an interview with News Central TV, Amuneke stated, "I am a Nigerian. All my life, I have served Nigeria as a player." He expressed openness to contributing value to the team if Nigerians find him fit for the role. However, he emphasized the current focus should be on supporting the team and the nation during a challenging period.
Amuneke urged respect for the team and fellow Nigerians experiencing difficulties. He stated, "We all want the best for our country, the best for our football. This has to be respected." Notably, Jose Peseiro took charge of the Super Eagles in May 2022 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later that year. The situation remains fluid as discussions about the coaching position unfold amid the team's recent achievements and challenges.
