Everton 0-1 Fulham: Fulham secure Premier League debut victory with De Cordova-Reid goal
Posted : 12 August 2023
Fulham secured a narrow victory over Everton in their first match of the new Premier League season, thanks to a winning goal from substitute Bobby de Cordova-Reid.
De Cordova-Reid, who came on for Willian at half-time, found himself unmarked at the far post and converted from Andreas Pereira's pass in the 73rd minute, granting manager Marco Silva a positive start to the campaign.
The Jamaican forward could have extended Fulham's lead, but his volley from inside the box lacked control. Nevertheless, Fulham managed to secure all three points despite facing a strong Everton side.
Summer signing Raul Jimenez also came close to scoring for Fulham, hitting the post. On the other hand, Everton was left to rue their missed opportunities. Striker Neal Maupay, in particular, wasted several clear chances, with Bernd Leno making crucial saves, including a close-range block.
Leno also denied Abdoulaye Doucoure and saw Nathan Patterson's shot hit the crossbar. The defeat was a bitter pill for Everton, as they started the season with a disappointing loss.
Fulham's victory was somewhat unexpected, as they spent much of the match on the back foot, only to capitalize on a chance and secure the win against the run of play.
The win is especially satisfying for manager Marco Silva, who was previously sacked by Everton in 2019. He led Fulham to a 10th-place finish last season, showcasing his managerial prowess.
Despite the challenges faced during the pre-season, with striker Aleksandar Mitrovic's uncertain future and absence from the starting lineup, Fulham managed to deliver a strong performance.
Mitrovic came off the bench, testing Jordan Pickford with a shot. However, it was substitute Pereira who made the decisive impact by setting up De Cordova-Reid's winning goal.
While Fulham managed to secure victory, Everton's offensive woes were evident. They struggled to score goals last season, and new signing Youssef Chermiti, who joined from Sporting Lisbon, was not able to contribute in this match.
With Dominic Calvert-Lewin unavailable, Maupay led Everton's attack but struggled to find the target, exemplifying his ongoing goal-scoring challenges.
Despite Michael Keane finding the net in the first half, his goal was disallowed due to Tarkowski's foul on Leno.
Ultimately, Fulham's victory highlighted their ability to seize opportunities and make the most of their chances, while Everton's difficulties in front of goal were once again evident.
