Evan Ferguson to miss Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifying matches against France and the Netherlands

Posted : 05 September 2023
Evan Ferguson, the talented Brighton forward, will miss the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and the Netherlands due to injury. This setback occurred after he injured his knee during Brighton's recent 3-1 victory over Newcastle, despite his outstanding performance, which included a hat-trick in that game. Ferguson, who is only 18 years old, was anticipated to lead the Irish attack in the upcoming matches against France and the Netherlands.

The Republic of Ireland will face France in Paris on Thursday and then host the Netherlands in Dublin on Sunday. Unfortunately, Ferguson won't be able to participate in these crucial fixtures as he has been ruled out after a medical assessment by the Irish team's medical staff.

The rest of the Republic squad is set to travel to Paris on Tuesday in preparation for the important game at the Parc des Princes. The team, managed by Stephen Kenny, has collected three points from three games, currently sitting three points behind Greece in second place in qualifying Group B and nine points behind leaders France. The Netherlands, on the same points as the Republic, will play Greece on Thursday. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the finals in Germany next year.

Evan Ferguson, who has already made an impact with 10 goals in 24 Premier League appearances for Brighton, has earned six caps for the Republic. His absence will require Kenny to consider other forward options, including players like Adam Idah from Norwich City, Will Keane from Preston, Aaron Connolly from Hull, and Chiedozie Ogbene from Luton.

In addition to Ferguson, Republic captain Seamus Coleman and forward Michael Obafemi were previously ruled out due to injuries, while Wolves full-back Matt Doherty is suspended following a red card in a previous match against Greece.
