Posted : 02 September 2023
The European football transfer window closed with a staggering €8 billion exchanged, setting a new record. The Premier League led spending at €3.1 billion, followed by Saudi Arabia with €1 billion spent by teams like Al-Ahly, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Hilal. Serie A was third (€782 million), the Bundesliga fourth (€698 million), Ligue 1 fifth (€694 million), and La Liga sixth (€442 million).
Top transfers featured seven from the Premier League, including Moises Caicedo to Chelsea and Declan Rice to Arsenal. Caicedo's journey from Ecuador to Brighton and then Chelsea for £115 million was remarkable. Chelsea was the biggest spender at €464.1 million but also profited significantly from transfers, including Kai Havertz to Arsenal and Kalidou Koulibaly to Al-Hilal.
Last-minute moves included Erik ten Hag adding Sofiane Amrabat on loan from Fiorentina, and Liverpool acquiring Bayern Munich's Brian Graffenberch for €40 million.
While the Saudi league aimed for big names like Messi, Mbappe, and Salah, they signed Neymar for a whopping €350 million. Salah's £150 million offer from Al-Ittifaq was rejected. Other notable arrivals included Riyad Mahrez, Fabinho, Sadio Mane, N'Golo Kanté, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Kalidou Koulibaly.
The last day of the transfer window brought surprises like Mason Greenwood moving to Getafe, Ansu Fati's loan to Brighton, and Randal Kolo Muani joining PSG for €90 million after seeming to stay in Frankfurt. Barcelona made late additions, including Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo, marking a busy and eventful transfer window in European football.
