European Football Returns: New Eras and Challenges Await Top Teams

Posted : 04 September 2024

International football is set to make a swift return across Europe this week, just under two months after Spain clinched the Euro 2024 title against England in Berlin. As the action resumes, several intriguing storylines are emerging, with two rounds of fixtures scheduled over six days starting Thursday. These matches will see the continuation of Spain's recent success, England's transition into a new era post-Southgate, Cristiano Ronaldo's ongoing journey, the debut of new coaches, and the evolving format of the Nations League.

Spain, fresh from their Euro triumph and Olympic gold, are back in action to defend their Nations League title. Despite the absence of key players like Alvaro Morata, Unai Simon, and Mikel Merino due to injuries, the squad features promising talents such as Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. The team, led by Luis de la Fuente, faces a challenging start with a trip to Serbia followed by a match against Switzerland in Geneva. The group also includes Denmark, adding to the competitive atmosphere.

In England, the post-Gareth Southgate era begins with Lee Carsley, the England Under-21 coach, stepping in as interim manager. Carsley will lead the team through their Nations League fixtures against Ireland and Finland as the search for a permanent successor continues. Injuries have impacted the squad, with Jude Bellingham missing out, but uncapped players like Noni Madueke and Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up, offering a glimpse of England's future talents.

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo remains a key figure for Portugal despite a disappointing Euro 2024 performance. Coach Roberto Martinez continues to show faith in the 39-year-old, who has been named in the squad for upcoming matches against Croatia and Scotland. With Goncalo Ramos injured, Ronaldo is expected to start as Portugal looks to secure another Nations League title. Additionally, several other nations are beginning new chapters under fresh leadership, while the Nations League itself introduces a revised format, including quarterfinals and potential impacts on World Cup qualifying.
