European clubs should invest in academies and coaches to avoid exodus from Saudi Arabia

Posted : 18 June 2023
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin stated that European clubs should not be concerned about players leaving for Saudi Arabia, as he believes the country is making a mistake by investing in aging stars.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have recently signed record-breaking contracts with Saudi Arabian clubs, and similar offers have been made to Lionel Messi and Luka Modric.

Ceferin does not fear a player exodus and sees it as a problem for Saudi Arabian football, suggesting that they should focus on developing their own players through investing in academies and coaches.

He cited China's similar mistake in the past when they brought in aging players. Ceferin emphasized that top players aim to compete in Europe, where the top competitions are held.

UEFA is considering implementing rules to cap budgets for salaries and transfers of clubs participating in European competitions to prevent a few clubs with unlimited resources from dominating.

However, the implementation of such rules within European Union laws and diverse tax regimes remains uncertain. Ceferin also mentioned that the idea of staging the Champions League final outside Europe has not progressed significantly, with the upcoming finals scheduled for London and Munich.
