Euro 2024 Qualification Updates: France, Belgium, and Portugal secure their spots

Posted : 14 October 2023
In the ongoing October window for Euro qualification, the tricolour star notched a brace in a 1-2 victory against the Netherlands, while Christiano Ronaldo added two more to his tally in a 2-3 win over Slovakia. The Red Devils also celebrated with a 2-3 victory against Austria in a home fixture.

Tonight (Friday), the Euro qualification continues with matches from three groups, marking the first qualifiers for the 2024 Summer European Championship in Germany.

In Group B, France secured their Euro 2024 qualification with a resounding victory in Amsterdam over the Netherlands. Kylian Mbappé ended a scoring drought, having not scored in four consecutive games with Paris Saint-Germain.

In Group F, Belgium triumphed in their battle for the top spot in Austria and clinched their place in the Euros. Portugal remained unbeaten in Group Y and also booked their spot in next summer's tournament, with Cristiano Ronaldo setting new records.

Netherlands - France 2:1

France entered the match in Amsterdam knowing that a win would secure their qualification for the European Championship for the ninth consecutive time. Despite the Netherlands having nine points in the group, they couldn't overtake the perfect France, as they had lost to them twice.

Kylian Mbappé, who had struggled to score in his last four games with Paris Saint-Germain, opened the scoring seven minutes into the match and completed a brace with a curling shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute. Quilindeshi Hartmann, a 21-year-old Feyenoord player, scored on his debut in the 83rd minute, but the Netherlands fell to third place. It was the Netherlands' seventh loss to France in their last eight meetings.

Ireland vs. Greece 2:0

Greece, although having a game in hand over the Netherlands, now sits three points ahead of them and is in second place, securing their place in the European Championship. Georgios Giakoumakis (20) and Yorgos Masouras (45+4) scored for Dublin, leaving Ireland with just three points.

Austria vs. Belgium 3:2

A dramatic shift in the group standings as the Red Devils secure their Euro 2024 ticket. Dudi Lukebakio (7th and 55th) and Romelu Lukaku (58th) put Belgium ahead by three goals. However, Ralf Rangnick's side, previously unbeaten, managed to claw back to 3-2 with goals from Konrad Laimer (73) and a penalty by Marcel Zabitzer (84). In the midst of this, Belgium's Amadou Onana received a second yellow card and a red (78).

Portugal - Slovakia 2:3

Cristiano Ronaldo netted two goals, taking his tally to 125 goals for the Seleção, and Portugal secured their spot in Euro 2024 in Germany. This is likely the last major competition for the 38-year-old CR7, who continues to set records as the all-time highest scorer on the international stage. Gonzalo Ramos (18) opened the scoring from an assist by Bruno Fernandes, but Cristiano Ronaldo added a penalty (29) and completed his brace in the 72nd minute. David Hanko (69) and Stanislav Lobotka (80) scored for Slovakia, who remain in second place.
