Michael Folorunsho, a midfielder eligible to play for the Super Eagles, has earned a spot in Italy's preliminary squad of 30 players for Euro 2024. His selection follows a standout season in Serie A, during which he scored four goals and provided one assist in 26 appearances for Verona.
Folorunsho, who developed in Lazio's youth system, received his first call-up to the Italian national team in March under coach Luciano Spalletti. Although he didn't debut due to fitness concerns, his performances this season have evidently impressed Spalletti, leading to his inclusion in the initial Euro squad.
Despite facing tough competition from established stars like Jorginho (Arsenal) and Nicolo Barella (Inter Milan), Folorunsho's recent form and versatility position him as a contender for the final squad of 26 players. The final roster must be submitted by midnight on June 7.
As the reigning European champions, Italy aims to defend their title in Germany this summer. Folorunsho sees upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina as opportunities to showcase his abilities and solidify his place in the final squad.
Previously, Folorunsho had loan spells at Reggina and Bari before joining Hellas Verona last summer. He featured in 34 matches across all competitions for Verona, contributing to six goals (five goals and one assist) during the season.
