Espirito Santo praises Awoniyi’s performance after Nottingham Forest vs Exeter

Posted : 12 February 2025

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has lauded Taiwo Awoniyi’s performance in their FA Cup encounter against Exeter City, highlighting his impact on the game. Despite not being a regular starter due to Chris Wood’s prominence in the attack, Awoniyi seized the opportunity to showcase his abilities.

The Nigerian forward made the most of his rare start by delivering an impressive display, including scoring a goal. Unfortunately, his night was cut short after he suffered a broken nose following a collision with Exeter goalkeeper Joe Whitworth, forcing him to leave the field prematurely.

After the match, Nuno spoke to talkSPORT, commending Awoniyi’s contribution despite the injury setback. “I think he broke his nose, but he’s walking around smiling. He did an amazing job, he did really well today,” the Portuguese coach stated.

Earlier in the January transfer window, Awoniyi was rumored to be considering a move away from Nottingham Forest to secure more playing time. However, no transfer materialized, and he remained at the club. Nuno, in previous interviews, had expressed confidence in his squad, emphasizing the importance of squad depth.

“I think we are in a good place as a squad. As long as we keep ourselves healthy and work as good as we are working, I think we can compete until the end of the season,” Nuno had mentioned before the FA Cup fixture.

He also reflected on the quiet nature of the January transfer window, acknowledging the club’s focus on maintaining squad stability. “It was a quiet window for all the clubs. It is always very difficult to operate, and we were aware of that. We had a clear intention to retain the core of the squad. All the players are here and available. We didn’t achieve what we wanted because it is very hard. We keep going.”

With Awoniyi delivering a strong performance in his limited playing time, Nuno might face a selection dilemma in the upcoming matches, especially if the Nigerian striker recovers quickly. His goal, a powerful strike in the 37th minute after receiving a pass from Ibrahim Sangare, further emphasized his potential impact in Forest’s attacking setup.
