Erik Ten Hag Retained as Manchester United Manager Following Post-Season Review

Posted : 12 June 2024

Erik Ten Hag will continue as the manager of Manchester United following a post-season review by the club's board. Discussions are currently underway to extend his contract, which is entering its final season. The review was initiated immediately after the FA Cup final.

Ten Hag faced the game against Manchester City amid rumors that he would be dismissed regardless of the outcome. However, United's 2-1 victory in the final allowed the club's hierarchy to consider his future more positively. "Constructive conversations" with Ten Hag have taken place, focusing on the review's outcomes.

All options were considered, but the club ultimately decided to retain the 54-year-old Dutchman. Ten Hag is pleased with the decision, despite some irritation over the time it took to reach a conclusion. United defended the two-week period as reasonable for a thorough assessment, especially considering the recent change in ownership.

Reports suggested that Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino were potential candidates, but interest in both has cooled. Other names linked with the job included Graham Potter, Thomas Frank, Roberto de Zerbi, and England manager Gareth Southgate. However, Brentford was never contacted about Frank, and Southgate's commitments with England made an appointment this summer impossible.
