Manchester United winger Antony must prove his worth through consistent training if he wants to secure his place on the team, according to manager Erik ten Hag. Antony, who joined the club from Ajax in 2022 for an initial fee of £80.75 million ($106.57 million), has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford and has seen his playing time significantly reduced this season. He has made just one appearance so far, with Ten Hag preferring former academy players Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Speaking to reporters ahead of United’s League Cup match against Barnsley, Ten Hag emphasized that in professional football, players must earn their positions by demonstrating their abilities and fitting into the team’s dynamic. "That is professional football, that is top football. Those are the laws. You pick the team that you think has the most chance to win a game," Ten Hag stated.
Ten Hag expressed that Antony needs to show he can compete with his teammates by performing well in training. "He has to bounce back and he has the abilities to do it. If he is doing the right thing, he can compete with them. He is fighting for his position," Ten Hag added. He emphasized that all players must display the right attitude and performance in training to earn their place in the squad.
Manchester United will face Barnsley on Tuesday and then travel to play Crystal Palace in a league match on Saturday.
