Erik Ten Hag: David de Gea is not an issue for Manchester United
Posted : 08 May 2023
Despite David de Gea's error against West Ham United on Sunday, Erik ten Hag stated he had "no concerns" about the Manchester United goalkeeper.
On Sunday at London Stadium, De Gea made a mistake by deflecting Said Benrahma's errant attempt into his own net, giving West Ham a 1-0 victory as United lost ground in the battle for the top four.
This season, there have been doubts about the Spain international's ability to be the No. 1 at Old Trafford, but Ten Hag claims he still believes in him.
"He has the most clean sheets in the Premier League, so we would not be in this position without him," Ten Hag told a news conference.
"So he has fully my belief, no concerns. Mistakes happen, but as a team you have to deal with it, you have to show character, be resilient and bounce back and this team will do."
De Gea's current agreement with the club expires in the summer, although negotiations to extend it are still going on.
When questioned about De Gea's long-term future, Ten Hag said that he thinks the 32-year-old will still be at the club next season despite United being connected with other goalkeepers.
"We want him to stay and we want him to extend his contract," Ten Hag said.
Although Ten Hag's squad has a game in hand, back-to-back losses to Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham have reduced United's lead over Liverpool in the race for Champions League football to just a point.
Although United must win their next three home games against Wolves, Chelsea, and Fulham in order to secure a top-four finish, Liverpool has won six straight games.
