Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed disappointment after his team could not sustain their intensity during Wednesday's 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League. Ten Hag felt his side should have capitalized on their lead to secure the victory, rather than allowing the visitors a chance to equalize late in the game. Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen initially gave United the advantage in the first half, but his mistake led to Twente’s equalizer in the 68th minute.
Eriksen's error stemmed from a moment of lost focus. Following a brilliant tackle by Manuel Ugarte that disrupted Bart van Rooij's advance, the ball fell to Eriksen, who was unable to react quickly enough. This lapse allowed Dutch striker Sam Lammers to seize the opportunity, steal the ball, and score, ultimately bringing Twente back into the match. Ten Hag noted the need for greater consistency, emphasizing that United had controlled the game well but faltered in the second half.
The manager also pointed out that the blame for the equalizer should not rest solely on Eriksen. He highlighted that the equalizing goal was a collective failure, noting that a Twente player was able to dribble through a significant portion of the pitch without being challenged effectively. Ten Hag underscored the importance of maintaining pressure and pursuing a second goal when in a leading position, stating that letting the opposition stay alive in the match would inevitably lead to consequences.
Looking ahead, Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday, followed by a Europa League match against FC Porto on October 3. Ten Hag's team will need to regroup and address their defensive lapses to ensure better performances in upcoming fixtures.
