Eric Cantona, the iconic Manchester United player, has criticized minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming that his leadership is stripping the "soul" from the club. Cantona, who played a key role in United's success under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s, expressed his disappointment with how the club is being run under the current ownership.
He believes the club is now being managed more like a business or economy, with a focus on strict financial measures that don't align with the club’s traditional values. Cantona also shared that, were he a fan today, he would not choose to support United.
Cantona’s concerns also center on several controversial decisions made under Ratcliffe’s ownership, such as plans to move away from Old Trafford to a new stadium, cutting Sir Alex Ferguson’s ambassadorial role, raising season ticket prices, and laying off staff.
He emphasized that the "soul" of Manchester United lies not just in the players, but in the larger community around them, including staff and fans. Cantona drew comparisons to Arsenal's move away from Highbury, stating that United would lose its identity if it left Old Trafford, a sentiment he shared with many fans who view the stadium as iconic and integral to the club's legacy.
Despite his criticism, Cantona offered to help Ratcliffe’s team in rebuilding the club, but his offer was dismissed. He revealed that he has since joined FC United, a breakaway club formed in opposition to the Glazer family's takeover of United in 2005, along with his family.
Cantona expressed sadness at United's current state, stating that the club’s current leadership had a different vision and strategy, one that he does not support or respect. He made it clear that, for his part, he had tried to contribute but felt ignored by the current regime.
