Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca believes there will be "no problems at all" when midfielder Enzo Fernandez joins the squad on Monday during their US pre-season tour, despite ongoing disciplinary proceedings for alleged racism. Fernandez, 23, was accused by the French Football Federation of singing a "racist and discriminatory" chant after Argentina's Copa America victory, which contained lyrics questioning the heritage of France's black and mixed-race players. His Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, who has one cap for France, highlighted the incident on Instagram, calling it "uninhibited racism."
FIFA has launched an investigation into the matter, and Fernandez has issued an apology. Maresca commented that Fernandez and the club have both apologized, making the situation clear and resolved in his view. He downplayed concerns about potential issues within the squad, which includes seven black or mixed-race French players, stating that he does not believe there are any bad intentions among them.
Maresca, appointed in May, was confident that Fernandez's return would not cause disruptions, emphasizing that both the player and the club have clarified the situation. He mentioned having spoken with Fernandez and other team members, asserting that there are no bad persons involved and that such incidents can happen without causing lasting problems.
Captain Reece James, speaking alongside Maresca ahead of a match against Wrexham in Santa Clara on Wednesday, expressed readiness to address any issues if they arise. He acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and Fernandez's quick apology to the club, team, and those offended. James noted that while Fernandez has not yet joined the squad, he has spoken with him and others involved, stressing the importance of keeping conversations internal and hoping for a positive resolution.
