The nine-time and reigning champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Enyimba International FC, on Tuesday explained the reasons behind their unprofessional conduct by using a handwritten name and number on the jersey worn by one of their players, Innocent Gabriel Okey, during their African Football League (AFL) clash against Wydad FC on Sunday.
Recall that the reigning NPFL champions came under fire after their poor display in the first leg of the AFL, as Wydad AC captain Yayha Jabrane scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 38th minute of the match played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Enyimba International FC, the 2022/2023 league champions, however, provided an explanation for the handwritten jersey number worn by Innocent Okey.
The shameful act drew criticism from sports enthusiasts who condemned it.
In a tweet on Tuesday, the management of Enyimba FC clarified the circumstances surrounding the handwritten name and number, calling it an error by one of their officials.
Enyimba FC said in its defense that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had registered Okey's number as 3 instead of 5 due to an error made by the team secretary.
