The newly appointed coach of Heartland International FC, Emmanuel Amuneke, has started his new role in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on a sour note as his team was roundly beaten by the rampaging 10-time champions of the league, Enyimba International FC.
Amuneke, who was appointed due to his impressive curriculum vitae as an experienced coach, unfortunately had no answer to the firepower of the Peoples' Elephant in the 2024/2025 NPFL Match Day 1.
The match, played at the home of the Naze Millionaires at Dan Anyiam Stadium, was a one-sided affair as Yemi Olanrewaju's boys outplayed the NPFL returnees.
Recall that Heartland FC secured their spot in the NPFL via a slot vacated by Beyond Limits FC, but now, things might not look promising given the result against Enyimba International FC.
In the opening Oriental Derby match in Owerri, Heartland International FC scored first, thanks to Suraju Lawal, who netted in the 53rd minute.
However, in a swift response, the Olanrewaju-tutored Enyimba equalized in the 67th minute as Ifeanyi Ihemekwele finished off the Naze Millionaires' goalkeeper.
Clinton Jephta then completed a brace in the 70th and 73rd minutes to secure the much-needed first win of the season for the Peoples' Elephant.
