England's Sarina Wiegman prepares for 'special but strange' clash with Netherlands in Women's Nations League

Posted : 25 September 2023
England manager Sarina Wiegman is gearing up to face her home country, the Netherlands, in the Women's Nations League, describing the upcoming match as "special but strange." Wiegman previously led the Netherlands to victory in Euro 2017 on home soil before securing Euro 2022 with England at Wembley.

This encounter marks Wiegman's first return to her homeland with her current team, and the match will be held in Utrecht. Reflecting on the occasion, Wiegman expressed her sentiments, saying, "Of course I have some memories here, and so do the English. It's very nice being here."

The familiarity between the teams adds to the uniqueness of the occasion, as Wiegman explained, "We know each other really well. I know most of the staff, the players, and it's in the Netherlands, so lots of people will be in the stands." She acknowledged the emotions stirred by their arrival and emphasized the need to focus on the upcoming important game.

In their previous Women's Nations League match, England secured a 2-1 victory over Scotland at Sunderland's Stadium of Light, earning three points in Group A1, alongside Belgium, who defeated the Netherlands 2-1. England's role as the designated nation for Team GB in Olympic qualification hinges on their performance in this group, necessitating a win in the group or a third-place finish if hosts France make it to the final two.

The Lionesses enter the match at Stadion Galgenwaard without any new injury concerns, and they have the added boost of Arsenal striker Alessia Russo being available after her rest against Scotland.
