Despite being held by Portugal in their final home match before the 2023 Women's World Cup, England coach Sarina Wiegman remains optimistic, stating that the team is in a "good place."
The Lionesses were unable to convert their numerous opportunities and struck the bar twice in front of a 26,267-strong crowd in Milton Keynes. Wiegman acknowledged their failure to score but highlighted the team's overall performance and unity, both on and off the pitch.
Although England did not showcase their best form, they had several chances to secure victory in the second half. Georgia Stanway hit the bar just before halftime, substitute Alessia Russo was denied by a goalline block, and Lucy Bronze's header also rattled the woodwork.
Wiegman utilized 17 players and experimented with different systems throughout the game, aiming to fine-tune their strategies for the upcoming tournament.
Despite their unbeaten streak ending with a loss to Australia in the previous match, the Lionesses continue to prepare for the World Cup. They have a friendly against Canada scheduled on July 14, eight days prior to their opening match of the tournament on July 22.
While England struggled to find their rhythm and appeared frustrated against Portugal, Wiegman remains positive about the team's overall progress and believes they are in a good position moving forward.
