England Under-21s suffer late defeat against Ukraine in Euro 2025 Qualifier

Posted : 17 October 2023
England Under-21s faced their first competitive defeat in over a year in a Euro 2025 qualifying match against Ukraine in Slovakia. Ukraine took a 2-0 lead by halftime, with Nazar Voloshyn scoring a calm finish and Oleh Ocheretko netting a superb free-kick.

Noni Madueke's curled goal gave England hope, and Charlie Cresswell's 89th-minute header leveled the score at 2-2. However, Illia Kvasnytsya's 94th-minute strike secured a late victory for Ukraine, sealing England's second competitive defeat in 20 matches.

Lee Carsley's team, the reigning European champions, struggled during a disjointed first half, with Ukraine deserving their lead. England's goalkeeper, James Trafford, was arguably at fault for the second goal as Ocheretko's free-kick found the far corner.

In the second half, the Young Lions responded well, and Cresswell's header seemed to secure a draw. Still, Kvasnytsya's late goal in stoppage time dashed England's hopes and sparked jubilant celebrations for Ukraine.

This loss marks England's second competitive defeat in 20 games, with their previous one occurring against Slovakia in June 2022. Despite a convincing 9-1 victory over Serbia in their previous fixture, England's disjointed performance in the first half and Ukraine's resilience ultimately led to their defeat in this Euro 2025 qualifying match.
