England make WWC quarterfinal, secures tense penalty shootout victory over Nigeria

Posted : 07 August 2023
During a round-of-16 clash in the Women's World Cup, England eliminated Nigeria from the competition via a tense penalty shootout on Monday. Following an intense 0-0 deadlock that stretched over 120 nerve-wracking minutes, Chloe Kelly's crucial spot-kick secured England's victory.

In the shootout, England's Beth England, Rachel Daly, and Alex Greenwood also successfully converted their penalties. Despite being down to 10 players due to a red card received during regular play, the European champions managed to hold their ground during extra time.

This red card resulted from forward Lauren James, who had been the team's leading scorer with three goals in the group stage, being sent off in the 87th minute. Her dismissal followed a contentious incident involving an ill-tempered contact with Michelle Alonzi, resulting in both players falling in a tangled heap.

The fourth-ranked English team is now set to face either Jamaica or Colombia in the quarterfinals, scheduled to take place in Sydney on Saturday.
