England Falls Short Again as Gareth Southgate Faces Uncertain Future After Euro 2024 Final Loss

Posted : 15 July 2024

Gareth Southgate has significantly changed England's fortunes in major tournaments, yet the team once again fell short after a painful 2-1 defeat in the Euro 2024 final, prolonging a 58-year wait for glory. Before Southgate's appointment eight years ago, England had only reached three major tournament semifinals and one final, which was their 1966 World Cup victory. Under his leadership, the Three Lions have reached three semifinals and two finals in the last four tournaments but were ultimately undone by familiar shortcomings as Spain secured a deserving victory.

Following England's dominant semifinal performance against the Netherlands, where Southgate hailed a "modern England," the team struggled against Spain's masterful midfield. The Spanish players, particularly Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, effectively dismantled England's defenses, leaving the team chasing shadows throughout the match. With Southgate's contract set to expire at the end of the year, speculation about his future has arisen, especially after the criticism he faced earlier in the tournament.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Southgate remains optimistic about the potential of his squad, which features a mix of youth and experience. Players like Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Declan Rice are all in their early to mid-20s and will likely continue to develop over the next few years. Southgate noted the importance of the team's consistent presence in crucial matches, highlighting the need to take the final step toward victory.

However, England's journey to the final was marked by a series of fortunate moments rather than consistent performance. Key players relied heavily on individual brilliance to secure late goals, with Bellingham, Saka, and Ollie Watkins all playing pivotal roles in earlier rounds. In the final, despite an equalizer from Palmer, England's luck ran out when they conceded a late goal to Mikel Oyarzabal. Southgate acknowledged the team’s lack of control and physical fatigue among key players but also recognized his responsibility for not rotating the squad adequately throughout the tournament, leading to another missed opportunity for glory.
