Emery declares Villa as underdogs facing Spurs this weekend

Posted : 01 November 2024

Unai Emery acknowledged that Tottenham are considered "favourites" to outperform Aston Villa in the Premier League due to their superior financial resources. As the two teams prepare to face each other on Sunday, Villa currently sits fourth in the league, five points ahead of Tottenham, managed by Ange Postecoglou. Despite this positive position, Emery emphasized that Tottenham's larger budget makes them the team to beat.

In his remarks, Emery pointed out that Tottenham has consistently been a formidable opponent. He stated that they not only have the advantage in this match but are also seen as stronger contenders for a higher league finish this season. However, Emery expressed confidence in his team's capabilities, saying, "We are competing and we are being confident in how we are doing our way."

The Villa manager noted that his team is striving to be in the mix with top clubs like Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle. He highlighted that competing at this level represents a significant opportunity for Villa, particularly given their recent success in both the Premier League and Champions League. Emery believes that his side is gradually improving and maintaining a consistent performance level.

Emery reflected on Tottenham's recent form, mentioning their 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the League Cup, which followed a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. Despite the inconsistency in the Premier League, where they have only secured three wins out of their last ten matches, he acknowledged that Tottenham remains a strong competitor.

Postecoglou, aware of the challenges his team faces, noted that while there have been some disappointing results in the league, they are committed to learning and evolving. He believes that the team's ability to bounce back after setbacks is crucial for their development. He emphasized the importance of playing the style of football they aspire to, stating, "It is part of the evolution of the team."

In terms of player availability, Spurs captain Son Heung-min missed the win against City due to injury but returned to training on Friday. His participation in the upcoming match against Villa remains uncertain, although he is hopeful about being fit. On the other hand, defender Micky van de Ven will be sidelined due to a hamstring injury but is expected to return after the international break.

As the match approaches, both teams are aware of the stakes involved. Emery’s confidence in his team's progress and Postecoglou's commitment to consistency will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this high-profile clash. It promises to be a compelling contest as both clubs aim to solidify their standings in the league.
