El Salvador loses against Martinique after a first-half two-goal surge
Posted : 27 June 2023
Martinique secured a 2-1 victory over El Salvador in their opening Group C match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup. The win marks Martinique's first group stage victory in the Gold Cup since 2019 and extends their winning streak in the tournament to three games.
Martinique took the lead in the 11th minute when Patrick Burner finished with his left foot to make it 1-0. Florent Poulolo intercepted an errant pass from El Salvador's Alex Roldan and set up Burner for a clinical finish. Just five minutes later, Martinique struck again as Brighton Labeau stole another Roldan pass and found Kevin Fortune, who scored with the outside of his right foot to give Martinique a 2-0 advantage.
Despite the early setback, El Salvador regrouped and applied more pressure on the Martinique goal. The momentum seemed to shift in their favor when Martinique's Jonathan Rivierez was shown a red card in the 48th minute, giving El Salvador a numerical advantage for the remainder of the match.
El Salvador created several scoring opportunities, with Jairo Henriquez, Brayan Gil, and Mayer Gil coming close to finding the net. In the 83rd minute, El Salvador was awarded a penalty after a VAR review, offering a chance to narrow the deficit. However, Martinique goalkeeper Yannis Clementia made a diving save to deny Henriquez's attempt and preserve Martinique's 2-0 lead.
Deep into stoppage time, El Salvador was awarded another penalty for a handball, and Bryan Tamacas converted the spot-kick to make it 2-1. However, the final whistle blew moments later, securing the three points for Martinique.
