Nigerian club El Kanemi Warriors were unexpectedly eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday, suffering a 2-1 defeat to African debutants Dadje in Benin. Despite drawing 1-1 in the first leg, Dadje advanced with a 3-2 aggregate score and will now face Renaissance Berkane of Morocco, who are two-time title holders, for a place in the group stage.
Dadje's Bless Salassi proved to be the decisive player once again, scoring twice in the second leg. His first goal came in the 30th minute, and although Clement Naantum equalized shortly after, Salassi secured the win with a strike in the 81st minute. This result gave Dadje a rare victory in African club competitions and showcased their strong performance in their debut season.
In other matches, Stellenbosch, a South African club making their debut in the Confederation Cup, advanced to the final qualifying round with a commanding 5-0 win over Ntsingizini Hotspurs from Eswatini. Former New Zealand international Andre de Jong was among the scorers, and Stellenbosch progressed with an 8-0 aggregate score. They will face V Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the next round.
Mozambican side Black Bulls also made headlines with a resounding 4-0 victory over Alize Fort of the Comoros, winning 11-0 on aggregate. Despite their impressive win, they fell short of the Confederation Cup record set by Gabonese club US Bitam in 2013. Black Bulls will face either 15 de Agosto of Equatorial Guinea or Otoho of Congo Brazzaville next.
In other fixtures, ZESCO United from Zambia and Dynamos of Zimbabwe drew 0-0, but Dynamos advanced after a 1-0 home victory. Ghana’s Nsoatreman, competing for the first time in the Confederation Cup, completed a 5-0 aggregate victory over Elect Sport of Chad, thanks to goals from Walid Fuseini and Stephan Diyou. Nsoatreman will now face CS Constantine of Algeria or Police of Rwanda in the next round.
