Ekiti Govt. proposes ultra modern indoor sports complex

Posted : 16 October 2024

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has promised to commit substantial resources to sports development in order to develop more talents, nurture them for national and global recognition, and create wealth.

Oyebanji made the pledge during the groundbreaking ceremony for the multimillion-naira Indoor Sports Complex in Ado-Ekiti.

Describing sports as a powerful tool to eradicate poverty, unemployment, and crime from society, Oyebanji stated that his government would expand opportunities for Ekiti youths, who are richly endowed with the requisite skills in the sector.

He mentioned that the project aligns firmly with the Human Capital Development, Job Creation, and Youth Development pillars and policy thrust of his administration, with a special focus on building profitable careers for productive youths in every sector of the economy.

Commending Ekiti athletes for their patriotic zeal, Oyebanji said, "I have been to the stadium, and I know you have not been training under the most conducive conditions. In spite of that, you are still winning laurels for Ekiti. I commend you for this.

"This project is part of my campaign promises, which I made during my election campaign. I promised to take sports out of the Ministry, which I have done. It is now being run as a full Commission.

"These are the two promises I have made for you, and I am fulfilling the second one today. This aligns with the Youth Development, Job Creation, and Human Capital Development pillars of my administration.

"Our mission is to build world champions here. We are not just building an indoor sports complex; we are building a center of excellence where talents are discovered, nurtured, and developed to the global level.

"We will build this facility, equip it, and hire the best coaches to train our youths. I have no doubt about the contractor's ability to deliver the best job for our people. To me, I consider this project a talent development center to train players so they can gain global recognition."

Speaking further, Oyebanji commended Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele for embarking on the construction of stadiums in some towns in the Ekiti Central Sectorial District, saying this significant step will further complement the government's efforts in the sector.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports Development, Hon. Odebunmi Idowu Id-aluta, stated that the facility will significantly help stem the rising tide of internet fraud and robbery that are rampant among the youths, while also fully tapping into their talents for self-development.

Outlining the significance of the project, the Technical Advisor to the Governor on Sports, Dr. Osetoba Olatunji Olusola, said the facility will help engage the youths and provide them with a viable avenue to excel in local and international competitions.

Osetoba praised the current administration for transforming sports into a sustainable career that can create wealth and fame for the youths, stating that in an effort to bolster financial backing for sporting activities, Oyebanji created the Ekiti State Sports Commission to provide the sector with the freedom to operate independently and enjoy financial autonomy.

"This facility will be an indoor sports complex for baseball, volleyball, modern gymnastics, and other sports. The impact will be far-reaching. It will help foster youth development by creating an enabling environment for improved skills to participate in national competitions.

"With this facility, we will have the opportunity to host national competitions that will boost the local economy. I am indeed glad that this administration has positioned Ekiti as a hub of sports in Nigeria."
