Egypt earned their 26th trip to the Africa Cup of Nations finals after defeating Guinea 2-1 in a comeback triumph. Egypt took first place in their qualifying group with one game left in the preliminary tournament.
Egypt won thanks to goals from Mostafa Mohamed and Mahmoud Trezeguet after captain Mohamed Salah missed two scoring chances.
Egypt's participation in the 24-team championships, which would be held in Ivory Coast the following year, is assured by the victory. Serhou Guirassy gave Guinea the lead, but Trezeguet tied it up and Mohamed scored the game-winning goal.
Since Ethiopia and Malawi, who each have three points, still have a chance to catch up in their forthcoming game, the loss puts Guinea's qualification in peril.
With a 3-2 victory over South Sudan, Gambia increased their prospects of making it back to the finals courtesy to a last-second goal by Hamza Barry.
Guinea Bissau's 1-0 win over Sao Tome e Principe improved their chances of qualifying from Group A.
If Sierra Leone fails to beat Nigeria in the next group match, Guinea Bissau will secure their fourth successive finals appearance.
