Austin Eguavoen has shared his reasons for accepting the role of interim coach for the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had initially sought to appoint German coach Bruno Labbadia but failed to finalize the agreement. With the head coach position still open and the AFCON qualifiers approaching, the NFF decided to place Eguavoen in charge on an interim basis.
Eguavoen, a retired Nigerian international, has previously managed the Super Eagles on three separate occasions, which likely influenced his recent appointment. His first stint began in 2005, alongside assistants Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, and Ike Shorunmu, during which he led the team through the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.
His most recent term was in 2021, when he led the Super Eagles to the Round of 16 in the Africa Cup of Nations and continued as coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, his tenure did not secure a place in the World Cup, as Nigeria was defeated by Ghana.
In a statement to the Super Eagles' official channels, Eguavoen emphasized that he did not actively seek this role but felt he could not turn down the opportunity when presented. He noted that as a member of the Federation and its Technical Director, it was his duty to step up when required.
Eguavoen clarified that his acceptance of the interim role was not driven by personal ambition or lobbying but rather by a sense of obligation and favor. He expressed gratitude to football for the opportunities it has given him and viewed this role as a way to give back to the sport and the Federation.
He acknowledged the situation's urgency and the necessity to commit fully to the task at hand. Eguavoen stressed that his focus is on unity and shared goals within the team, urging everyone to work together toward success.
Eguavoen’s first challenge will be a match against Benin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, followed by an away game in Kigali against Rwanda.
