EFL Trophy: Shoretire nets two, but Man United loses 7-goal match
Posted : 01 November 2023
Newcastle-born Nigerian attacking midfielder, Shola Shoretire, scored two goals, but it wasn't sufficient as Manchester United suffered a 4-3 defeat against Salford City's first team in an EFL Trophy match at the Peninsula Stadium in Greater Manchester on Tuesday night.
The Anglo-Nigerian talent is unlikely to feature in the match tonight against his hometown club, Newcastle United, in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, as he played the full match against Salford City.
Just seven minutes into the game, Shoretire celebrated after opening the scoring with a curled shot at the back post, but Salford City netted twice in the first half to turn the match around.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Omari Forson equalized with a well-placed finish, and Shoretire added his second goal of the game in the 51st minute.
Matthew Lund scored twice from the penalty spot in the final ten minutes to complete his hat-trick and secure the victory for Salford City.
Despite training with the senior squad multiple times this season, Shoretire has yet to earn a call-up for Manchester United's first team in the 2023-2024 season.
In nine appearances for the development squad in various competitions, he has been directly involved in eight goals (5 goals, 3 assists).
