EFL Cup: Aribo lifts Southampton, but Iwobi and Bassey exit with Fulham

Posted : 18 September 2024

Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo played a pivotal role in Southampton’s EFL Cup victory over Everton, scoring during the penalty shootout to help secure a win in the round of 32.

Aribo, who had been left out of Southampton’s recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, returned to the starting lineup for the clash at Goodison Park. His presence was crucial as Southampton aimed to advance in the cup competition.

The match began with a challenge for Southampton, as Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton ahead in the 20th minute. Southampton equalized in the 31st minute through Taylor Hardwood-Bellis, leveling the score at 1-1.

Aribo was active throughout the game, contributing with 54 touches, a 93% pass accuracy, and a shot on target. Despite his efforts, he did not register a goal or an assist, and the match concluded 1-1 after regular time, heading into a penalty shootout.

During the shootout, Aribo successfully converted his penalty kick. Everton’s Ashley Young missed his crucial penalty, leading to Southampton emerging victorious from the shootout.

In another EFL Cup fixture, Calvin Bassey did not feature for Preston, while Alex Iwobi played 13 minutes for Fulham in their penalty shootout loss to Preston North End.

Preston North End took the lead in the first half through Ryan Ledson, but Fulham equalized with a goal from Reiss Nelson in the second half. Iwobi, who was brought on in the 77th minute, was unable to make a significant impact. The match went to penalties, where Iwobi successfully scored two of his attempts. However, Timothy Castagne’s decisive penalty ensured Preston’s progression and Fulham’s elimination.
