Edo Queens fall to superior powers of Rivers Angels

Posted : 23 November 2023

Edo Queens Football Club of Benin, at the Adokiye Amasiemeka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Rivers Angels FC on Match Day 2 of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.

The host side took the lead in the 3rd minute of play when Ezekiel Motunrayo, playing from the wings, unleashed an unexpected bullet shot from the right, beating Edo Queens goalkeeper Etim Sunday.

Suliat Abideen, the captain of Edo Queens, leveled the score for her side in the 39th minute, bringing the halftime score to 1-1.

Both teams returned for the second half looking more forceful, making several attempts at each other's goal. Edo Queens could have taken the lead in the first half but missed glaring scoring chances.

Edo Queens lost grip of the game in the 67th minute as the host team took advantage, pushing Edo Queens to play defensively. Under pressure, Rivers Angels scored the second goal in the 68th minute and secured the third and winning goal in the 79th minute, scoring two goals in quick succession.

Edo Queens fought hard to reduce the tally, but the Port Harcourt-based ladies resorted to tactics of falling and time-wasting. Spectacular efforts made by Edo Queens captain Suliat Abideen and her teammates, however, yielded no results.

Coach Moses Aduku of Edo Queens made a corrective change in the lineup, bringing in Glory Osaghae to add bite to the attack, but the lanky striker couldn't salvage the situation. The center referee brought the game to an end after 3 minutes of added time.

As the match has been won and lost, Edo Queens will put the loss behind them and focus on preparing for the next game against Sunshine Queens FC of Akure.

Edo Queens Coach, Aduku, said that the team believes in the philosophy of taking one game at a time. "It is too early to write off any team. Edo Queens will certainly bounce back big; it is not over yet until it is over," he said.
