Eden Hazard's Real Madrid contract expires this month, set to leave

Posted : 05 June 2023
Real Madrid has announced that Eden Hazard will depart this month after agreeing to have his contract terminated one year early.

One of the top talents in the Premier League, Hazard, 32, moved to Madrid from Chelsea in July 2019 and signed a five-year contract worth an initial €100 million.

His four seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu have been hampered by ongoing injury issues, and this season he has only made six LaLiga appearances, four of which were as a substitute, without scoring a goal.

"Real Madrid C.F. and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement whereby the player will be released from the club as of June 30, 2023," Madrid said in a statement on Saturday.

"Eden Hazard has been part of our club for four seasons, in which he has won eight trophies: one European Cup, one Club World Cup, one European Super Cup, two Leagues, one Copa del Rey and two Spanish Super Cups.

"Real Madrid wants to express its affection for Eden Hazard and wishes him and his entire family the best of luck in this new period."

During his first year in Madrid, Hazard suffered an ankle fracture that required surgery and the placement of a metal plate. The plate created additional issues until being removed two years later.

The former captain of Belgium never regained his form or fitness, and Vinicius Junior, a young emerging star, took up his favoured left-wing position.

Following Belgium's elimination from the 2022 World Cup's group stage, he announced his retirement from international football in December.
