The Ebonyi Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jude Okpor, has assured the safety of all participants in the half marathon scheduled to take place in Abakaliki on September 13 and 14.
Okpor made this statement in Abakaliki while briefing the media about the event, adding that the state government has finalized plans to ensure a smooth 21.9 km half marathon.
The commissioner noted that the marathon organizers are professionals who will ensure that traffic disruptions are minimized during the event, which is the first of its kind in the state’s history.
“The event on Friday, Sept. 13, will be a business roundtable, which is confined to a specific location and therefore will not pose any traffic challenges,” he said.
“The event will allow investors and sports stakeholders from across the state and beyond to explore business opportunities in the state’s sporting sector.”
“Designated routes have been mapped out for the marathon on Saturday, Sept. 14, while alternative routes have been set for motorists and other road users.”
“The marathon will take place within a specified period, and once it concludes, all roads will be reopened to traffic,” he added.
He mentioned that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other agencies have been mobilized to ensure smooth traffic flow and protection for all participants.
“The government approved the event following a presentation to the state executive council by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports,” he said.
“The event will be organized by the state government in collaboration with the reputable sports agency, Fair Play Sports.”
“The event was approved after considering its sporting, health, and economic benefits to the state,” he added.
Okpor said the benefits are based on the convergence of people from various parts of the country to the state.
