Nigerians abroad: Ebere debuts with Libertadores goal, Aliyu shines, Osimhen responds to Barca, Onyekuru struggles

Posted : 22 February 2024

In Wednesday's standout matches, a remarkable performance unfolded across various competitions:

Osinachi Christian Ebere showcased his skills by scoring from the penalty spot, contributing to Nacional's 2-0 away victory against Academia Puerto Cabello in the CONMEBOL Libertadores second-round clash in Venezuela. Ebere, recently loaned to Nacional from Plaza Colonia, made an impactful debut during the weekend's 2-1 win over River Plate and is now focused on aiding his team's progression in the competition.

Defender Sodiq Ololade Atanda played a crucial role in Erzeni Shijak's 2-1 victory over Vllaznia Shkodër in the Round of 16 Cup tie. The second leg of this fixture is scheduled for March 5 at the Stadium Loro Boriçi in Shkodër.

Victor Osimhen marked his first Napoli goal of 2024 in a 1-1 draw against Barcelona during the first knockout round fixture at the Diego Maradona Stadium. Robert Lewandowski initially gave Barcelona the lead, but Osimhen's equalizer sets the stage for an intriguing second leg.

Injured Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi was absent as Porto secured a last-minute 1-0 victory against Arsenal.

Peter Utaka and Japan’s Ventforet Kofu faced disappointment, being eliminated from the Asian Champions League after a 5-1 aggregate loss to Korea Republic’s Ulsan. Ventforet Kofu suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium, with Utaka making a substitute appearance in the 55th minute.

Anthony Nwakaeme and Henry Onyekuru featured for Al Feyha, but their efforts couldn't prevent a 2-0 defeat to Al Nassr.

Cristiano Ronaldo extended his impact, scoring four minutes from time to secure a 3-0 aggregate victory for Al Nassr over Al Feyha, eliminating the latter from the competition.

Ibrahim Aliyu played a pivotal role by providing the assist for Houston Dynamo’s crucial goal in the 2-1 away defeat to St. Louis City in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Samuel Oluwabukunmi Adeniran led the line for St. Louis City.

Both teams are set to clash again next Wednesday to determine which side will advance to the next round of their respective competitions.
