Dumfries ruled out, De Jong doubtful for Netherlands' match

Posted : 17 March 2025

Denzel Dumfries has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad for their Nations League quarterfinal match against Spain, with uncertainty surrounding Frenkie de Jong's fitness, the Dutch football association confirmed on Monday.

Dumfries sustained an injury while playing for Inter Milan in their Serie A victory over Atalanta on Sunday. He has been replaced by Ajax Amsterdam's 22-year-old defender Youri Baas, who received his first national team call-up on his birthday.

To provide cover for De Jong, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman has also added Brighton & Hove Albion's Mats Wieffer to the squad. De Jong missed Barcelona's win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday due to illness.

Although De Jong joined the Dutch squad on Monday, he did not participate in the training session. His condition remains a concern as the team prepares for the quarterfinal tie against Spain.

The Netherlands will play the first leg of their quarterfinal match against Spain in Rotterdam on Thursday, followed by the return leg in Valencia on Sunday. Both teams will be looking to secure a place in the semifinals.

With key players like Dumfries and potentially De Jong unavailable, Koeman will have to make adjustments to his lineup ahead of the crucial clash against Spain. The Dutch team will be hoping for a strong performance despite the injury setbacks.

As the Nations League approaches, the absence of two vital players presents challenges for the Netherlands, but the squad remains determined to progress in the competition. The outcome of these two matches will determine their chances of advancing further.
