Borussia Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin has acknowledged the exceptional performance of Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika during their UEFA Champions League match against Club Brugge on Wednesday. Onyedika made a notable return to the Champions League as Club Brugge hosted Borussia Dortmund at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
The match was evenly contested in the first half, with both teams creating chances, but no goals were scored before the break. The balance continued into the second half until the 76th minute when Jamie Gittens broke the deadlock for Borussia Dortmund.
Gittens further extended Dortmund’s lead ten minutes later with a precise shot from inside the penalty area. Serhou Guirassy added the third goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time from a penalty, securing a 3-0 victory for Borussia Dortmund.
Despite the defeat, Onyedika stood out for Club Brugge, delivering an impressive performance with 67 touches, two interceptions, and four tackles. His contributions made him the second-highest in touches for Club Brugge during the game.
After the match, Borussia Dortmund’s Sahin expressed his admiration for Onyedika’s performance. He revealed that Dortmund’s initial strategy was to disrupt Onyedika’s influence, but they were unsuccessful in doing so.
“We were aware that Club Brugge’s play revolved around Raphael Onyedika, but we couldn’t manage to neutralize him,” Sahin commented, according to Ma Pro League.
Onyedika has been a key player for Club Brugge since his arrival two seasons ago. If his form continues, he may attract interest from larger clubs in the near future.
