Dortmund Left Frustrated After Lille Hold Them to 1-1 Draw in Champions League Clash

Posted : 05 March 2025

Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can admitted his team fell short in their 1-1 draw against Lille in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. Dortmund took control early, with Karim Adeyemi scoring in the 22nd minute, but they struggled to maintain their dominance.

Lille responded in the second half, as Jonathan David set up Hakon Haraldsson for a 68th-minute equalizer, ensuring an open contest for the return leg in France. The result was a setback for Dortmund, who had shown signs of improvement under new coach Niko Kovac following a poor domestic campaign.

Despite defensive improvements under Kovac, Dortmund's performance against Lille exposed lingering weaknesses. Can criticized the team’s lack of intensity and urgency, stating they failed to "push past the pain barrier" against a determined Lille side.

The German club struggled in possession and looked sluggish off the ball, which allowed their opponents to find a way back into the game. Can emphasized the need for more courage and determination, acknowledging that Dortmund must raise their level if they hope to progress to the quarterfinals.

Midfielder Pascal Gross echoed Can’s frustration, highlighting the team’s frequent turnovers and lack of aggression. Gross, who had a goal disallowed for offside, remained optimistic about Dortmund's chances, pointing out that the tie remains finely balanced at 0-0 heading into the second leg.

While acknowledging the challenge ahead, he expressed confidence in Dortmund's ability to win in France and keep their Champions League campaign alive.
