Borussia Dortmund heads to the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday for a rematch of last season's Champions League final against Real Madrid, facing the challenge amid a troubling spell of form and scrutiny directed at coach Nuri Sahin.
Last season, Dortmund entered the final at Wembley with unexpected momentum, having been predicted to exit the group stage. However, despite dominating much of the match, they succumbed to Madrid's swift counterattacks, conceding two late goals and finishing the game with a 2-0 loss.
Following a disappointing domestic campaign that saw Dortmund finish fifth, the club parted ways with coach Edin Terzic, promoting his assistant Sahin to take the helm. With only ten games in charge across all competitions, Sahin now faces the most significant test of his nascent managerial career, as his team struggles to establish a consistent tactical identity. Dortmund started the season with a solid win over Eintracht Frankfurt but suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Stuttgart shortly thereafter, leaving them seventh in the Bundesliga.
While Dortmund has fared well at home, winning all five of their matches at Westfalenstadion with an impressive goal tally of 19, their performances away from home have been less convincing. They have only secured two wins out of five on the road, with their victories coming against lower-tier teams.
In stark contrast, Real Madrid has excelled at home, winning all seven of their competitive matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding just four in the process.
Dortmund's attacking options are limited ahead of their clash, with key players such as Karim Adeyemi and Giovanni Reyna sidelined due to injury. Their hopes rest significantly on striker Serhou Guirassy, who has found the net 12 times in his last eight games.
Despite a narrow victory over St Pauli, Sahin expressed dissatisfaction with his team's defensive lapses, highlighting a need for improvement. As they prepare to face a formidable Real Madrid side, led by a resurgent Kylian Mbappe, Dortmund must overcome their defensive frailties and find their rhythm to secure a positive result.
