Borussia Dortmund head coach Nico Kovac has praised Carney Chukwuemeka for his promising display in a brief appearance against Union Berlin on Saturday. The young midfielder, who is eligible to represent Nigeria, made an impact despite his limited time on the pitch.
The 21-year-old joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea during the January transfer window but has yet to start a match for the German side. His playing time has been minimal, with just four minutes of Bundesliga action before his latest cameo.
Chukwuemeka featured late in the game against Union Berlin, entering when Dortmund had already established a three-goal lead. Reflecting on his Bundesliga debut, he expressed his excitement about playing in front of 80,000 fans and contributing to the team’s dominant performance.
Dortmund secured a comfortable victory, with Diogo Leite’s own goal opening the scoring before Sehrou Guirassy netted four times, three of which came while Chukwuemeka was on the pitch. Maximillian Beier added the final goal in the 89th minute, marking a successful first league win for Kovac since taking over from Nuri Sahin.
After the match, Kovac spoke highly of Chukwuemeka, commending his technical abilities and sharp decision-making. The coach highlighted the midfielder’s ball control, quick turns, and acceleration as qualities that set him apart and make him a valuable asset to the team.
Dortmund’s loan agreement with Chelsea includes a €35 million option to buy, but the deal depends on the club securing European qualification. Currently sitting 10th in the Bundesliga with 32 points from 23 games, they remain in contention for a European spot but must improve their form.
Chukwuemeka, born in Austria to Nigerian parents, moved to England at a young age and has represented the Three Lions at youth level. However, he remains eligible to play for the Super Eagles should he choose to switch international allegiance.
