Nigeria’s Flamingos, despite their 2-0 quarterfinal defeat to the USA on Monday, won the Women’s U-17 World Cup Fair Play trophy, though the team had already returned to Nigeria.
Tournament officials awarded Nigeria this honor, recognizing them as the most gentle and friendly team of the event.
A highlight of Nigeria’s participation was drawing the largest-ever crowd in the Dominican Republic for any football match, with 13,535 fans attending their game against the host nation.
Jon Il-Chong of North Korea was awarded the tournament’s Golden Ball as the Best Player, Pau Comedador Prado received the Silver Ball as the second-best, and Celia Segura took the Bronze Ball.
The Golden Boot for top scorer went to Pau Prado with five goals; Kennedy Fuller received the Silver Boot with four goals, and Celia Segura won the Bronze Boot, also with four goals. Nigeria’s Shakirat Moshood and Rim-Jong Choe, who also scored four goals each, missed out due to a lower number of assists.
The Golden Glove for Best Goalkeeper was awarded to Evan O’Steen of the USA, whose team finished in third place.
The USA received their bronze medals, Spain followed with silver medals in somber spirits, and North Korea accepted the gold medals as world champions.
Referee Delane Muniz of Brazil, who officiated the final, led the officials, including VAR personnel, in receiving their medals.
The next tournament will be held in Morocco, Africa, with 24 teams instead of the current 16, and it will become an annual event instead of every two years.
